Optical patch cords and connecting cords
Optical patch cords are used to interconnect digital distribution devices, as well as connect them to functional network equipment. In appearance, it is a fiber optic cable half a meter long. The edges of such a wire must be crimped with connectors. The latter are selected to a certain size. Finished products vary:
- type of cable itself (single- or dual-fiber);
- type of connectors;
- bending radius;
- mechanical strength;
- resistance to natural factors.
Sold in skeins of a certain length, differing in the installation method (internal/external).
Buy an optical connecting cord and for an adapter
There are simplex and duplex cables. Wires with two identical connectors at the edges are called optical patch cords - you can order them through the IPCOM online store. Different connectors are installed on adapters and are marked as FC or LC.
Criteria for distinguishing patch cords | Characteristics of connecting cables | Features | Application |
Fiber type | There are single-mode SM and dual-mode MM. | Single-mode are made from optical fiber with a thickness of 6-10 microns, multimode - from fiber 50 microns or 62.5 microns. | Used for fast transmission of light signals between digital equipment. |
Polishing type | It can be machine-made (marked UPC) or flat with cut ends (marked APC). | The end of the wire with machine polishing is cut at an angle of 90°, and with a flat one - at an angle of 8°. These two types of processing cannot be combined, as there is a risk of damage to the optical fiber itself. | Provides high speed signal transmission over the connecting cord. |
Cable type | Can be single or double. The first is called simplex, the second is duplex. | The edges of both wires can be crimped with the same or different connectors. | Depending on the type of connector, the cords can serve as a connection or be used as adapters. |
Most often, optical patchcords are purchased at an affordable price with UPC machine polishing. Visually, this cable is distinguished by a convex shape, a blue braid, and its tip is in close contact with the socket of the socket. APC cords have a very small bevel cut (no more than 8°). Additionally, they are distinguished by the green color of the braid.
Interesting! Different tip shapes are used to reflect signal interference that is transmitted along fiber optic wires and significantly impairs communication.
The patch cord marked APC is best protected from interference. Its tips effectively reflect interference, improving signal quality. At the same time, such wires are not compatible with other types of cords, which narrows their scope of application. Therefore, optical connecting cords with UPC markings remain common - the price of such an accessory is always acceptable for buyers.
How to choose and order connectors for an optical cord
When choosing a patch cord, the type and shape of the connectors that are used to crimp the working edges of the wire are important.
FC type connectors feature a rounded metal body with a built-in spring. They are made in the form of a safety ring, which is why they received the name Ferrule. For reliable fixation, such a connector must be screwed tightly into the socket.
Standard plastic models with snaps are designated SC. And in a smaller version, LC caps are produced. Because of their ability to glow, they are called Lucent Connector. They can be connected in large quantities to patch panels.
If a multimode cable with UPC polishing is used, then it is crimped with ST connectors. Straight connectors are made from a brass-nickel alloy. Therefore, they are durable and resistant to damage.
In order for the optical cord to quickly transmit data, it is crimped with modern MT-RJ caps with convenient latches. The neat-looking connectors install very quickly and cope well with reflective signals.
